Repent!

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near” says Jesus,   “repent and believe the good news.”

What does it mean to repent?

Interestingly enough it does not necessarily mean to cry and to feel badly, (although these feelings may occur, depending on the repentance)

It means to change – change my heart, my mind and my behavior

It means to head out in a new direction

For Jesus’ hearers it meant to stop praying for the arrival of the kingdom                           (they had been praying that God would become king for hundreds of years)

“You can stop praying – the kingdom has arrived”

We do not need the temple – God will live in each of you

The Scriptures are fulfilled

The land is not now Israel – the good news is for the whole world!

And by the way – in this kingdom, says Jesus, I am king

What does this mean in our lives?  Paul say that “we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

VCI is a call to repent – to change our behavior in some very specific ways – but the prescriptions can only change some behaviors

Changing our hearts and minds is up to us – and God

And that, dear friends, is the meaning of Lent
